Assessment for Physical Education Department’s Second Level Disciplines Authorized to Offer Master Degree

On the morning of February 21, 2016, well-known experts in educational circles from the two sides of Taiwan Straits gathered in the conference room on the 2nd floor of Jianwen Building at Xiamen University. They were invited to conduct a qualified assessment on the department’s two second level disciplines authorized to offer master degree, namely, physical education training and national traditional sports. Experts include: Professor Yang Hua, Presidentand Party Secretary of Beijing Sports University; Professor Wang Jiahong, doctoral supervisor, Assistant Principal of Suzhou University, member of the Disciplinary Council of the State Council Academic Degree Committee, assessment expert of National Social Science Fund; Professor Ji Liu, doctoral supervisor, dean of School of Physical Education of East China Normal University, member of the Disciplinary Council of the State Council Academic Degree Committee, assessment expert of National Social Science Fund; Professor Zhou Aiguang, doctoral supervisor, former dean of School of Physical Education of South China Normal University, member of the Disciplinary Council of the State Council Academic Degree Committee, assessment expert of National Social Science Fund; Professor Bai Jinxiang, doctoral supervisor, President of Jishou University, assessment expert of National Social Science Fund; Professor Zhang Ruilin, doctoral supervisor, President of Jilin Institute of Physical Education, assessment expert of National Social Science Fund; Professor Zhao Rongrui from Taiwan University of Physical Education, doctoral supervisor, member of the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan and Professor Sun Qilin from Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Physical Education Department attached great importance to the assessment. The preparation work of the assessment started from March to December, with Professor Lin Zhicheng, Directorof the department, taking the command personally and Professor Zheng Jie, Deputy Director of the department, being responsible for the specific affairs. There were altogether 16 staff involved in the assessment, including 7 master supervisors, 5 backbone teachers, secretaries of graduate students and the office staff. 4 symposiums for the assessment and 3 party-government meetings were organized, and the department summed up comprehensively the graduate training and education situation since the establishment of the two disciplines, especially in the past five years, and formed “Self-assessment Report of Second Level Disciplines Authorized to Offer Master Degree of Physical Education Department at Xiamen University.”

On the conference day, the assessment report was conducted by Professor Lin Zhicheng, Director of the Physical Education Department at Xiamen University. He elaborated the situation of the two master programs from the perspective of basic introduction, the goals and standards, the basic conditions of the master degrees and the personnel training as well as the existing problems and the improvement of the programs

Deputy director of Graduate School at Xiamen University, Fan Lijuan, on behalf of Graduate School, expressed her welcome to the experts, and said though currently the two master programsare relatively small in scale, they are Xiamen University’s master's degrees with characteristics of their own, and Xiamen University attaches great importance to the development of sports. He said, Professor Wu Daguang, Vice-president of Xiamen University, is in charge of sports, and during his term he will give more support to the development of sports work. Fan Lijuan invited experts to make a comprehensive investigation on the two programs and shed light on the assessment work.

The expert group consulted Professor Lin Zhicheng and Professor Zheng Jie on the funding, training objectives and contents, training methods, discipline characteristics and training scale, internationalization and other aspects of the two master programs. At the same time, the expert group had a talk with the representatives of teachers and students concerning the two disciplines’ teaching conditions, training capacity and quality.

At the feedback meeting, the expert group fully affirmed Xiamen University's emphasis on physical education, and affirmed the achievements that have been made in the personnel training system. The specialty of the physical education training is qualified, and the specialty of national traditional sports is basically qualified. And the expert group proposed valuable comments and suggestions on the existing problems and future development of the programs.
